Linux Outlaws 52 - Not Sponsored by Dell

Podcast List - Sun, 24 Aug 08 - 01:00 pm

101:56 minutes, 47.3 MB — Download or play

In the longest Linux Outlaws to date, Dan and Fab talk lots of open source as well as freedom-hating and interview Evan Prodromou from identi.ca about his Laconica project.

Introduction and Housekeeping (01:03)

  • We have a very long show for you this week, including a great and pretty detailed interview
  • Fab forgot to thank TLLTS last week for massively supporting us again, we are making up for that this week
  • Andreas Gohr, the man behind DokuWiki, told Fab about FrOSCON and he’ll try to get down there and check it out

Releases and News (05:32)

Microwatch

Crapintosh

The Interview (29:05)

We interview Evan Prodromou of identi.ca (@evan) about open source (especially in conjunction with network services), free content, “microblogging” and how the creation of Laconica came about. During the course of the session we also cover some weirdnesses of the French language, Evan’s use of Linux and how he first installed it, his thoughts on the OpenMoko FreeRunner and much more.

Listener Feedback (81:14)

  • Johan Burell asks us for our opinion on this article — the question is basically if Linux is ready for mass adoption (forum topic)
  • 5 Zune Dave thinks Apple is more evil than Microsoft and wants our opinion
  • Andrew Sullivan tells us about the Ontario Linux Fest and invites us along
  • Chess Griffin of Linux Reality congratulates us on our 50th episode
  • Simon Mikkelson tells us why he converts our Oggs into mp3s at his end (using BashPodder)
  • Snack Machine B says he has no problems with our files on his Cowon players
  • Dylan Coakley asks Fab if he ever tried Hoegaarden and appologises for giving us shit at LugRadio Live about our files not working on his phone
  • MalkorTheTechie send us some pretty funny bumpers for the show, which we play

Before we wrap it up, we also mention that Dell is now providing extended warranty for those broken NVIDIA chipsets.

  • Peter Cannon answers Dan on the “Free Music Challenge”

  • Iwan van der Kleijn gives Dan a kicking about Java vs. JavaScript and says we should do a show on Microsoft and Open Source
  • Tim send us a link to this great Calvin and Hobbes comic about flamethrowers
  • Aaron B. has a theory that all the layed-off coders from Microsoft are doing viruses now
  • Steve Riddit sends us a message about Photoshop and the GIMP in two (!) accents, he also has the idea that people could write in and tell us about how they are seeing Linux and Free Software appearing around them which is a great idea

Wrapping it up, we thank everybody who donated to the show to help us cover some of the cost — thank you! We also mention the fact that Software Freedom Day is getting closer. Last but not least, check out our torrents of the LO Extra pack.
